Title: To Bleed a Crystal Bloom
Author: Sarah A. Parker
Pages: 486
Synopsis:
“What a pretty flower to keep locked in a big, rocky tower.”
Nineteen years ago, I was plucked from the heart of a bloody massacre that spared nobody else.
Small. Fragile.
An enigma.
Now ward to a powerful High Master who knows too much and says too little, I lead a simple life, never straying from the confines of an imaginary line I’ve drawn around the castle grounds.
Stay within. Never leave.
Out there, the monsters lurk. Inside, I’m safe … though at a cost far greater than the blood I drip into a goblet daily.
Toxic, unreciprocated love for a man who’s utterly unavailable.
My savior. My protector.
My almost executioner.
I can’t help but be enamored with the arcane man who holds the power to pull my roots from the ground.
When voracious beasts spill across the land and threaten to fray the fabric of my tailored existence, the petals of reality will peel back to reveal an ugly truth. But in a castle puddled with secrets, none are greater than the one I’ve kept from myself.
No tower is tall enough to protect me from the horror that tore my life to shreds.
REVIEW
TW/CW: Blood, EXTREMELY suggestive content, smut, Anxiety, Body Dysmorphia?
Woah. When the synopsis says “dark” you really can’t take that stuff for granted. I was having cringy nightmares about this. In this book our main character, Orlaith is rescued from a massacre at the tender age of 2 by the region’s Lord, Rhordyn who eventually raises her in a tower of his castle/estate.
To Bleed A Crystal Bloom is a fantasy world you can be engulfed into after a chapter or two and just can’t put down. I read it in less than a day and it got me out of a major reading slump. I did find it confusing at first but quickly got used to the authors writing style and later on didn’t have to refer to the glossary as often.
I honestly didn’t realize it was a Rapunzel re-imagining when I started reading because I wanted to go in blind and completely unaware of what was going on but the Rapunzel vibes are there and they are VERY dark. Kudos to the author for it’s originality and impeccable storyline. I found the characters quite likable and did eventually end up liking a side character more than the MC’s. I haven’t read any New Adult fantasy in quite a while but this has got me adding quite a few to my cart.
This book does have a ton of sexual tension and suggestive content so I don’t suggest you read this if you’re below 14 years old or you’re not comfortable reading this type of content. There are secrets buried deep that will *hopefully* be revealed in the rest of the series and just so many loopholes waiting to be explored.
Orlaith (MC) is like a goth, depressed version of Bella from Twilight in that, her whole existence is based upon being in a relationship with Rhordyn (other MC & love interest). I like this book in the way that everyone liked Twilight when they read it for the first time. The characters were well thought out, there is quite a bit of blood being described and discussed and the world is rather easy to get lost in.
I’d recommend this for fans of Twilight (obvs) and The Vampire Diaries (it doesn’t have anything to do with vampires). Thank you to @TurnThePageTours and @SarahAParker for having me on this tour. The book was a delight to read and I look forward to the sequel!
